Rangoli Radio – Empowering Young Voices

By Mark Mildren July 2025
The Rodillian Academy partnership students from Broomfield South SILC School have worked on a project with Rangoli Radio…

In a resounding success for inclusive education, Rangoli Radio has once again partnered with Broomfield South SILC School, this time at the Rodillian Academy partnership students, to empower over 12 students with special educational needs (SEN) through a transformative live radio broadcasting project. This initiative has been lauded for significantly boosting students’ confidence and self-esteem, allowing them to flourish as radio presenters.

Building on the success of similar work at Broomfield South SILC Future Steps Hub, the “Live Radio Broadcasting Workshop” immersed students in the world of live radio production through four engaging sessions. Students embarked on a journey that began with an introduction to radio operations and the intricacies of crafting a compelling show. They then moved to developing and refining their show ideas with expert guidance and constructive feedback from the Rangoli Radio team. The highlight for many was the thrilling live broadcast experience from the Rangoli Radio Studio, where students produced their own segments with professional assistance. The program culminated in a celebratory session, where students received recognition and Rangoli Radio certifications, reinforcing their newfound confidence and project management competencies.

This hands-on experience has been pivotal in equipping students with invaluable communication skills, bolstering their self-esteem, and fostering confidence in articulating and advancing their ideas. The structured nature of show creation also nurtured essential project management and team collaboration competencies. Students demonstrated increased confidence, clarity, and active listening abilities, exploring their interests while enhancing their speaking and listening skills. As one student from a previous project enthusiastically shared, “That was great fun”.

Beyond the direct benefits to the students, this project also includes a dedicated “Spotlight Show” on Rangoli Radio, featuring The Rodillian Academy partnership of Broomfield SILC. This segment provides a platform for school representatives to share their unique programs, achievements, and mission through an on-air interview, highlighting the school’s commitment to supporting students with learning needs. This initiative not only inspires listeners but also serves as a powerful medium to foster greater community engagement and awareness.

Rangoli Radio, a not-for-profit community interest company, operates from its studio in White Rose Park and serves over 450,000 listeners in the Leeds area through DAB radio, with an additional 10,500 listeners across 180 countries via internet streaming. Their commitment to inspiring, educational, and entertaining programming continues to highlight and celebrate the positive contributions within local communities. The success of this initiative with The Rodillian Academy partnership students from Broomfield SILC stands as a powerful testament to the school’s dedication to inclusive education and the transformative power of combining theoretical learning with practical application.

Evaluation of Six-Week Project with Rangoli Radio

The pupils have all absolutely loved being part of this project. They loved the initial tour of the radio station where they learnt about the history of radio generally, but then more specifically Rangoli Radio. The hosts have been fantastic with the Broomfield pupils, recognising their different learning styles and how best to support them and their individual needs.

The pupils have developed a range of skills through this project, from recognising and learning about the different segments of a radio show, to planning their own show and then delivering this live on the radio. It has been amazing to see their confidence levels grow and to see their sense of pride when their parents listened in and commented on their performance. The pupils particularly benefited from being able to focus their show on their interests and being able to allow their individuality to shine through.
